Working with young teenagers on developing acadmeic and/or extracurricular interests can be difficult. The question, "is anyone getting much out of this activity?", has been a recurring and challenging one with regards to running the after-school program for our older kids.

That question never approached my mind during our first week of visiting immersion groups. With extra english speakers present, we were able to do one-on-one conversational english lessons with the girls. This meant I had the privilege and joy of seeing I let her hair down a bit and be truly excited about learning english. The excitement and confidence to step out of her comfort zone was largely due to the particular visitor working with her, and getting to observe a moment like that from afar reminded me why I wanted the after-school program as a responsibility in the fist place. The goodbyes said to our visitors a couple days later were not easy for I.

When I first came to the Finca on an immersion group last March, there were also some tears shed when my group left. Nate's (boss man) words about it stuck with me -- "Seeing some of our kids cry during goodbyes made me happy, because it means they were loved very well during the week".

I didn't fully understand those words for a long time. But watching the tears stream down I's face as she said her goodbyes, I couldn't do anything but smile and think of Nate's words. I get it now.
